How long should a Cover Letter be?

Cover letter length

When writing a cover letter, it’s important to think about who is going to be reading it and how long should be the cover letter. The employer will most likely be a busy person, and they will probably have a whole stack of cover letters to read through, so your cover letter will have to stand out from the crowd. Employers won’t have to work hard to read your cover letter and they certainly won’t want to read a long essay. They will, however, want to read enough to convince them to invite you to an interview. So, preparing a right cover letter length is very important.

Cover Letter Length – One Page

One page is usually about right but you also shouldn’t be writing to hit a certain word minimum. Now if your cover letter length is too short, the hiring manager might think that you are too lazy or just don’t care about such things. If written too long, then he might just pass it away.

The perfect cover letter length is the amount of space it takes to explain why you’re an unusually strong candidate for the job aside from what’s on your resume. The best approach is to stick to facts of writing the letter.

  • Start from the very beginning mentioning the reasons and make your lines attention seeker.
  • Trim any overlong sentences, cut out superfluous words, and make sure every sentence has a point.
  • Be sure your paragraphs are short and to the point, no more than three or four sentences long.

As per few experts, your cover letter length should not exceed more than a size of a page. Around 70% of the employers prefer a bit longer cover letter, whereas the shorter cover letter is liked by 30% of the employer. Whereas in one survey, 70% of employers said they preferred a cover letter length to be either half a page, or “the shorter the better”. That said, it has to be long enough to create a compelling case that you are the best person for the job, which might be tough in half a page or less.

Sure, a one page cover letter is the norm, but if you have a good reason for a second page, don’t fiddle with the margins or the font to fit all the content on one sheet. Just move ahead to page two. If there are any specific directions from the employer about the cover letter length, make sure you adhere to the instructions to the letter.

As long as you have a strong case for you being the best person for the job, and you haven’t just repeated your resume, then it’s a good length.
